Happy 2022! Entering a new decade, we are committed to making people aware of health and its importance. It’s vital to change the behavior foundations for good health like sleep, activity, mindfulness, and proper nutrition. It’s always healthy to have adequate sleep, more activity, a healthy diet, and less stress.
Let’s start with things that we can all benefit from; getting out of the chair. Being more active is super healthy and contributes to better health. A report in JAMA that being more physically active has many benefits on health. It’s not difficult to combat our inactive lifestyle, as many physical activities are healthy and fun to do.
Here are a few tips that can help employees remain active at their working place.
Â
Getting a break from sitting
A little nagging is beneficial, even if it is automated. Encourage your employees to set some movement alarms after a specific time to remain active. Some people set a threshold of 250 steps per hour and set a gentle reminder to stay active. Many apps can help you to set this hourly reminder.
Â
Schedule meetings on the move
Workout benefits in increasing the blood flow throughout the body, including the brain. Better blood flow means more oxygen and energy and better brain performance. If a project team has better regular weekly meetings, you can conduct them while walking. Or schedule it in a room on the other side of the office on campus.
Â
Launch workout day
It’s a popular in-house program where the employees are allowed to wear their workout attire in the office. They participate in office-wide workouts like Pilates and yoga. Such activities benefit from encouraging physical activity during the day.
Â
Stand up for better health
Provide your employees with stand-up desks. Models of standing desks vary from brand to brand, but the primary purpose is to allow employees to work comfortably. Standing comfortably has several benefits, like reducing back pain and burning more calories.
Â
Take an active break
Instead of eating your lunch on your computer desk while checking your emails and social apps, take a break to be physically active. It will benefit in returning to your work being more revived and refreshed, and you will be able to concentrate better.
Whether going for a brisk walk, cycling, or a short tour to your gym. It will help you to concentrate in a better way during the remaining office hours. A study claimed that being physically active for at least one hour daily decreases the death risk due to continuous sitting of at least 8 hours in a day.
Â
Don’t be a desk potato
According to the world health organization, lack of physical activity is the fourth biggest killer of the modern world. The scariest thing is that it has overtaken obesity, and it can happen to us without even realizing it.
Most of us spend 8 to 10 hours on our chairs, whereas some spend up to 16 hours on our computers. Then go home by car and sit at the dining table to eat, safe to enjoy snacks…. So much sitting without any activity, no wonder how dangerous it can get.
The only possible solution is to get a move on to have a healthy and happy new year.Â

I had surgery on my shoulder in June. And my employer won" t let me come back to work until I can lift 25#. I was in physical therapy and insurance did not pay any more. The Dr. suggested that I get into the gym that our employer has membership. I went to our HR. person, and she said since I was inactive employee I could not enroll. And it is expensive to join. As a membership fee, then a monthly fee. So right know I am not doing anything. But I got to get moving!!
